Newly Appointed Teachers:

Valerie Pettys, was appointed a Sanbo Kyodan teacher by Ryoun Yamada in 2005, a position confirmed by Ruben Habito. She continues to practice under his guidance and assists Habito in teaching duties. She has been practicing Zen since 1994. Pettys is an accomplished flutist and often performs with the Dallas symphony. She is married and currently completing doctoral studies in Hebrew Bible at Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University.
Helen A. Cortes was appointed Assistant Zen Teacher by Ruben Habito in 2006. She continues to practice under his guidance and assists Habito in teaching duties. Helen works as Executive Director of the Maria Kannon Zen Center and is part of the editorial staff of the Zen Journal. She has a degree in Psychology and finished her masters in Industrial Relations from the University of the Philippines. She has been involved in a lot of infrastructure programs and has worked with the poor farmers of the Philippines and has taught at the Benedictine High School in Manila. Presently, she is an Oblate of the Osage Monastery.
